Informative Tool
Telegram
Telegram is a cloud-based
instant messaging service through which users can share text messages, files, and group chats or channels with large audiences.
It has bots, voice and video calls,
and a high level of privacy features. It is fast, secure, and easy to use. It has large group chats (up to 200,000
members) supported. Cloud storage makes it accessible via multiple devices. Bots and automation make interaction better (e.g., reminders for a poll).
Teachers have utilized Telegram to form class groups to share resources, reminders,
and hold informal discussions. For example, a teacher in a rural area utilized Telegram channels
to share daily lessons and audio explanations, which enabled students to continue studying even with the lack of official e-learning platforms. Low data consumption was particularly useful in regions where internet connectivity was poor.
Benefits for educators
Easy Communication: Announcements,
assignments, and reminders can be easily communicated by
teachers to the students or parents.
Group Learning: The Telegram groups
enable group discourse, question-and-answer sessions, and peer interaction.
Resource Sharing: Teachers can share documents, pictures, videos, and links
to facilitate learning. Broadcasting through Channels: Teachers
can broadcast through channels to distribute lesson details, assignments, and study material, independent of responses.
For Students:
Instant Access to Study Material: The students can access and get notes, videos,
and assignments on their mobile phones.
Collaboration: Group messaging fosters collaboration, peer encouragement, and the exchange of ideas.
Flexibility: Students can learn at any time, anywhere, even after school hours.
Self-Learning: Resources can be accessed at any moment, allowing for revision and self-learning.
As I think for myself, Telegram
is much more useful compared to other applications such as Messenger or
Facebook, to which everybody is addicted nowadays, because first of all, it provides
1. Better Communication
Telegram offers a direct and effective means of
communication among students and teachers. Unlike email, Telegram enables real-time interaction, eliminating the time lag in addressing doubts or communicating crucial updates.
Example: Class cancellations or rescheduling of tests can be directly informed to the students by the teacher, or any study-related or class-related emergencies.
Access to Learning Resources
Teachers are able to share a list of learning resources, at the range of PDFs, PowerPoints, voice notes, as well as video lectures—directly to the students. Telegram supports sharing files up to 2 GB, which is significantly more compared to most messaging applications. This has simplified textbook shortages in
the nation.
3. Group Work
Telegram has both channels and groups:
Groups are suitable for classroom discussion, where all get an opportunity to speak.
Channels enable instructors to broadcast messages to groups without getting responses, maintaining the focus on the content.
Telegram also supports the use of bots—automated programs that can administer quizzes, take attendance, send reminders, or assist with group interaction management.
Examples:
Quiz bots for practice tests
Class attendance bots on online classes
Reservation bots for scheduling class timetables or due dates
6. Privacy and Security
Teachers can control privacy settings, for example, who can view their contact information or join the groups. Telegram also offers secret chat functionality, which is end-to-end encrypted and can be set to self-destruct after a
certain amount of time.
7. No Cost Barrier
Telegram is free, and this makes it accessible
to teachers and students even in resource-scarce environments. It also uses less data than video
conferencing software and can perform adequately even on slow internet speeds.
Telegram is not just a
messaging application , and a versatile learning platform that can facilitate communication
